Electorate of Rankin
History
The Federal seat of Rankin was named after Dame Annabelle Rankin 1908-86, the first Queensland woman elected to the Senate 1946-71 and the first Australian woman to hold a top-level diplomatic post as High Commissioner to New Zealand 1971-74.
Rankin was first proclaimed as a Federal seat in 1984 following a Federal redistribution. It has had only two serving members, both representing the ALP: The Hon David Beddall and Dr Craig Emerson. Rankin is the only Federal seat in Queensland that has always been held by the ALP.
