History

The Federal seat of Rankin was named after Dame Annabelle Rankin 1908-86, the first Queensland woman elected to the Senate 1946-71 and the first Australian woman to hold a top-level diplomatic post as High Commissioner to New Zealand 1971-74.

Rankin was first proclaimed as a Federal seat in 1984. It has had only two serving members, both representing the ALP: The Hon David Beddall and the Hon Dr Craig Emerson. Rankin is the only Federal seat in Queensland that has always been held by the ALP.

Geography

The seat of Rankin covers 131 square kilometres and has more than 94,000 electors. It is situated in south Brisbane and much of Logan City. It is regarded as an outer urban seat.  Download electorate map here.
